What's considered an urgent care situation for a pet?
An urgent care situation would be any illness or new clinical sign that needs to be addressed immediately but is not necessarily life-threatening. It can be anything from straining to urinate, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or sneezing. I like to tell people to think about it the way you would think about yourself. You're not going to go to urgent care for a broken bone necessarily, but for a cold, respiratory virus, or urinary tract infection. That's an urgent care situation.
What types of emergencies are handled at a pet urgent care facility?
We can handle anything from ear infections to upper respiratory viruses, vomiting and diarrhea, skin infections, and chronic conditions that appear to be worsening at off-hours.
When should I bring my pet to urgent care rather than wait for a regular appointment?
If you feel that your pet is uncomfortable, has a chronic condition that is suddenly worsening, or new signs such as listlessness or lethargy, anything that makes you feel like your pet is off, listen to your gut and bring them in.
How is urgent care different from emergency care for pets?
Urgent care is set up to handle minor injuries and illnesses, whereas emergency care is set up to handle life-threatening conditions, hospitalizations, and major surgeries. Emergency care tends to have more resources.
Can I bring my pet in for urgent care without an appointment?
Yes, absolutely. Bring your pet in without an appointment. That's what we're here for!
How much time does a typical pet urgent care visit take?
An urgent care visit, depending on the underlying issue, can range anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes and can last a couple of hours, potentially.
What do I need to bring to an urgent care appointment for my pet?
Any previous medical records you have for your pet, any medications they're on, and their diet would be helpful. If they may have gotten into something and you're concerned about that, bringing the packaging would also be helpful for us.
Will my pet's records be shared back with the veterinarian after the visit?
Yes, absolutely. We will send referral information right back to your regular veterinarian.
Are urgent care services available for all types of pets?
We'll be providing urgent care services for dogs and cats.
What should I do if my pet's condition worsens before I arrive at urgent care?
That's a really good question. I would advise calling us to let us know what is happening. We can advise you if we need to redirect you to an emergency clinic, if that's faster, or if there's something you can do to help stabilize your pet before coming to us. There might be situations where we stabilize and then have to send the pet to an emergency clinic.
Are follow-up appointments necessary after a pet urgent care visit?
Typically, follow-up appointments at your regular veterinarian are recommended to ensure that the situation is resolving appropriately.
Is urgent care covered by pet insurance?
Typically, anything that's a new condition is covered by pet insurance, and we can help submit those claims for you.
What is the most important advice when determining if my pet needs to go to urgent care?
You know your pet better than anybody else. If you think something is off, just be on the safe side and listen to your gut. You know your pet better than anybody else does!
